HISTORY

The judicial branch of government successfully protects the rights and interests of the public, as long as courts are independent in the work that they do and if the functioning of the courts is ensured by a court administration system which is well-organised and optimal for the economic conditions which prevail.  Since 2004, a new institution has been established in Latvia to organise and administer the courts and to ensure that their financial, material and technical needs are satisfied.  That is the Court Administration (CA).

CA was established on January 5, 2004 and till April 1, 2004, the CA took over the relevant functions and instruments for the performance of those functions from the Justice Ministry. CA is a direct administrative institution subordinate to the Minister of Justice, which organises and provides the organisational management of district (city) courts, regional courts (further - courts) and Land Registry Offices. At the beginning of the year, the Court Administration employed 11 people.

During the first few months of operations, the personnel of the Court Administration was established in accordance with the everyday work of the institution. On April 1, 2004, the Court Administration took over the relevant functions and instruments for the performance of those functions from the Justice Ministry. By the end of the first year of operations, the Court Administration employed 60 civil servants and other employees.
